Well, I’ve been waiting for the Gingerbread update for my Thunderbolt since June and it looks like it’s finally starting to get pushed out.  The update will be pushed over the next few day’s so keep trying, I have not recieved it yet.

Here’s the email statement, from Verizon Wireless spokesman Albert Aydin:

“Verizon Wireless has begun pushing a new software update for the ThunderBolt by HTC. The software updates the device to Gingerbread, Android 2.3. Customers can download the update by going to Settings > Software Update > Check New. “


The 2.11.605.5 update has many of the same features of the previous update with the addition of:

  • Fixes the voicemail notification error.
  • Improved security features that reduce device vulnerability.
  • Bluetooth security patch has been included.
  • Basic voicemail notification will now notify when a new voicemail has been received.

The list of features in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update are impressive, with the addition of download manager, active app management, shortcuts, one-touch copy/paste, widgets, icons, app groups, updated calendar options, camera geotagging, improved email synching, and camera auto-focus improvements.

Along with getting all the great features of Android 2.3 Gingerbread the update adds enhancements:improved security, better battery efficiency, better Bluetooth audio, enhanced roaming UI, desktop cradle support and fixes SMS misrouting problems.

Youu will be notified that a system update is available on your HTC ThunderBolt. Touch OK and the download will begin.It will take you approximately 20-40 minutes to download the software, depending on network conditions.. Installation should take up to 10-20 minutes additional. Keep in mind that during the installation you will be unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls.

If you are roaming you will not receive a system update notice. You will need to enable Wi-Fi and wait for the update notice to appear.
