While certificates and degrees are available, on the job training is sufficient for some positions. Skill and proficiency ensure continued demand for the services of professionals in this field.
Function
2. Computer repair technicians work in different settings and locations. Corporate IT or information technology, sections often employ their services. Retail electronics stores have computer centers with repair technicians to help customers who purchase electronic products. Large computer manufacturers have central service locations where the work is performed.
Computer repair technician's services are also needed in the military, law enforcement, health care, National Security, and education professions. Self-employment is also an option for anyone employed in this field.
Services

Some of the services performed by computer repair technicians are technical support, finding and destroying viruses and spyware, data recovery and restoration, and replacing complete operating systems when called for. Specialized services include systems administrator and information systems specialists.
Repairs take place onsite and off, depending on the severity of the problem and the technician's usual working practices. Recycling of old computer parts is another service sometimes offered.
Types
4. Computer repair technicians work on hardware in the form of desktop and laptop computers, and other components that go along with the computers such as the mouse, keyboard, scanners and printers, speakers, and other input and output devices. Systems technicians may also work on networking hardware like routers and wireless networks.
When working with software, computer repair technicians try to protect the user's data as much as possible. Keeping passwords and settings intact is optimal, but sometimes a complete system restore is called for.
Significance
5. Computer repair technicians ensure the smooth operation of computer systems. Without the services of computer repair technicians, a glitch in an operating system could derail a company's plans and result in lost profits, valuable information could be lost from hospital and school systems, and other major problems could go unsolved.
