Spam filtering why use a barracuda

Post by MikePeller »

Here are the basics.
Microsoft exchange is not a filter for email. It is designed to be used in conjunction with outlook and having outlook handle spam or Junk email. Outlook has a very powerful junk mail filter that you can set an infinite amount of rules on how you want to handle it. Also thru Microsoft Junk mail updates, Outlook tries to detect spam email and place in Junk. Outlook then allows you to whitelist emails that are allowed or even entire domains. You can also mark emails that were not marked as junk to be marked as junk and why, so further emails like it go to junk. You can then set a rule to, let’s say delete mail in your junk folder after 30 days. Although this does work it takes some training and knowledge by the user on how best to manage this. The drawback to this is the time it takes to learn how to manage this and the time to do the management itself. Also this combination allows email that may have harmful intentions to be put into your email server and workstations. This creates bloat on the systems and risks infection. There are 3rd party filters that work at the server level including one by Microsoft called forefront, these range in price from 300.00-700.00 and requires constant management as the spammers of the world change their methods constantly to keep a step ahead of the spam filters.

The reason we recommend the Barracuda email filter system is that it is simply the best one out there. You can buy it outright for 3500.00 and a yearly subscription of 299.99 for a firm of your size. Or you can rent it on a monthly basis of 29.99 no contract needed. Other than the obvious filtering of bad things and spam it also acts as a backup service in case your server is unavailable to receive email due to system downtime, internet outage or power outage. Even they are backed up, we use a group that have a barracuda in Chicago and in Atlanta that work together in case one of them are off the net. If for some reason your server is offline for an extended period we can have them redirect your emails to another server like our email server so you can still get your email. They barracuda is updated by their team every 2 hours to update bad (or good) things to help give you the best experience, with the least false positives and minimal spam.

Bottom line is you can do it or you can pay someone to do it.
